 Weston Walking Group

Weston Walking Group was the brainchild of Daisy Davis, a retired headteacher from Birmingham. In 1974 she held a meeting attended by a few interested people and the group started. Gradually the numbers increased, leading to the formation of a committee and the construction of a constitution. Initially, walks were on the first Saturday and third Sunday of each month. During the mid 80’s, many people took early retirement, with the introduction of midweek walks.

Since those early days the group has grown and evolved, but we continue to offer enjoyable walks, in welcome settings with a group of like-minded people.

Currently, weekend walks take place on Saturdays, with Sundays reserved for outings, usually taking place twice a year; one in the spring and one in the autumn. Weekday walks are mainly on Wednesdays, although walks can take place on other days as well.

These days we are a much bigger group. Walks are led by members and can be anything between 4 and 10+ miles. Short walks are between 4 and 5 miles, medium walks are 6 to 9 miles and long walks are 10+ miles. Leaders usually do a “ reccie “before the walk, so they have prior knowledge of the walk they are leading.

Our walks calendar shows the planned walks a couple of months in advance. You can choose the walk you want according to your personal circumstances. As we live in a beautiful area, many walks are local, but we do venture further afield to such areas as The Quantocks, Cotswolds, Forest of Dean, South Wales, the Mendips and Somerset.

We have a calendar of social events including meals, outings and organised walking holidays.

All ages and abilities are welcome, with a variety of walks to suit individual abilities. You can join us to meet everyone and see if you enjoy the walks as much as we do.

We are all about joining together, enjoying the scenery, getting fit, meeting friends and having picnics in beautiful surroundings.

New members are especially welcome. Those on their own will soon feel welcomed and will make new friends.
